The Chrome Dinosaur Game
There are games that have marked a whole generation. In 1972, Pong, the first sports arcade video game to reach millions of fans. 26 years later, it was Nokia that revolutionized the genre and brought together several hundred million players with Snake. What do they have in common? A few pixels on the screen and a simple and repetitive gameplay making it addicting. In 2014, Google recreated the craze for this concept and launched the Chrome Dinosaur game available on the Chromebook.
A bit of history on the Chrome Dinosaur game
T. Rex Game or the Dino Game was born from the idea of making Chrome error pages more fun and enjoyable to minimize user frustration at not having access to the internet.
Sébastien Gabriel, graphics manager at Google, is in charge of developing a new design for all error messages from the Mountain View firm. As soon as he arrived in 2012, he created a dinosaur mascot which was quickly nicknamed Lonely T. rex.
Edward Jung, Alan Bettes, Manuel Clément, respectively programmer, Designer, Sound Design, brought the Dino to life in 2014 by launching it in a mad race on the Chrome browser.
The Dino game a simple and effective concept
What makes the game of Dino so attractive is its simplicity. Like Pong or Snake, it only takes a few keystrokes to play. Press the Space key to make the Dino jump and the down arrow to lower it. The Dinosaur advances on its own, and the player's goal is to make it travel the greatest distance without hitting a cactus or a pterodactyl.
Make no mistake, this game has only one end, clash with an obstacle and therefore defeat. Sooner or later your Dino will no longer be able to avoid the elements of the decor.
How to play the Chrome Dinosaur game
To put it simply The T-rex Game is nothing more than the approval of the lost Internet access error page. Thus, it is hugely successful in countries where the connection is uncertain such as Indonesia, India or Brazil.
At first glance, it doesn't seem like good news to see this game appear and yet! Rather than close the page, users started playing and performing on the Dino game. Some reach unimaginable scores, so much so that some simply cut off wifi access or the mobile network.
In 2017, the game takes a new turn and becomes playable even if you have a connection. Indeed, the team in charge of T. Rex slips an Easter eggs on Chrome and offers us the chrome: // Dino page. So, just press the space bar for the Dino game to go full screen and begin its frantic race.
Tips for winning the Dino game
Like any good game, some will play it to pass the time, while others will want to break records. So if you are the competitive type, here are some tips to always win the Dino game on Google Chrome.
It is possible through a few command lines to become invincible or even increase the scores to brag to friends.
Obviously I do not advise you to use them, because for me that takes away all the charm of playing.
# 1 Become invincible at the Dino game
Open the Chrome browser on the T-Rex Game page and press the Space key on your keyboard
Activate the developer console with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + J
Enter the following command at the prompt: Runner.prototype.gameOver = function () {}
You are immortal
# 2 Increase the speed of the Dino
Still in the developer console, enter the following command: Runner.instance_.setSpeed (10)
If you didn't enter the command to be invincible, chances are you've already lost the game 🙂
# 3 manually change your score
This command is only useful if you want to take a screenshot to wow those around you without even having played the game.
Still in the developer console, enter the following command: Runner.instance_.distanceRan = 12345 / Runner.instance_.distanceMeter.config.COEFFICIENT
Instead of the number 12345 insert the score you want to appear.
